Plain-English definitions for the terminology used across Coach's Corner.
- Accumulator
- A bet that links multiple selections; all must win for the bet to pay out.
- Asian Handicap
- A spread betting method that removes the draw option by giving one team a virtual advantage or disadvantage.
- Bankroll
- The total amount of money set aside for placing bets.
- Bet Builder
- A feature that lets you combine multiple outcomes of a single match into one wager.
- Bet Slip
- The digital record of your selected bets and the amount you intend to stake.
- Bonus
- Extra funds or free bets offered by the gambling site, often subject to conditions.
- Cash Out
- The option to settle a bet before the event ends, locking in a profit or loss.
- Double Chance
- A bet that covers two of the three possible outcomes of a match, increasing your chance to win.
- Edge
- An advantage a bettor believes they have over the bookmaker's odds.
- Free Bet
- A wager funded by the site that lets you risk no own money; any win is usually returned minus the stake.
- Handicapping
- The process of analyzing teams and odds to predict outcomes.
- In-Play
- Bets placed after the match has started, with odds that update as the game progresses.
- Juice/Vigorish
- The commission the bookmaker takes, built into the odds.
- Lay
- To bet against an outcome occurring; the opposite of backing.
- Margin
- The bookmaker's built-in profit, usually expressed as a percentage added to the true odds.
- Moneyline
- A bet on which team will win the match, with odds reflecting the likelihood.
- Odds
- A number that reflects how likely an outcome is and how much you can win if the bet succeeds.
- Over/Under
- A bet on whether a specific stat will be higher or lower than a line set by the bookmaker.
- Parlay
- A single bet that combines several selections; all must win for the bet to pay out.
- Point Spread
- A number set by the bookmaker to make both teams equally attractive to bet on.
- Rollover
- The number of times you must bet a bonus amount before you can cash it out.
- Stake
- The amount of money you put at risk on a bet.
- Underdog
- The team or player expected to lose, offering higher odds and a larger potential payout.
- Value Bet
- A bet where the odds seem higher than the actual chance of the outcome, giving you an advantage.
- Void
- A canceled bet where the stake is returned, often because the event did not happen or rules were broken.
